Naomi Campbell for Dennis Basso

You would think Naomi is my favourite model as often as I feature her but that’s not the case. It’s  just that she has been so damn fabulous recently. Seems like Russia and the Russian lover are having a good influence on her. She is looking better than ever and this campaign for Dennis Basso’s AW/2010-11 is just amazing. But where everNaomi goes, controversy follows.  The model made it clear in PeTa’s campaign in 1997 that she’d “rather go naked than wear fur” but that hasn’t stopped her taking the runway wearing fur and posing for campaigns such as the Dennis Basso one seen here. Her explanation has been that she thinks the group go too far in their aggressive protests against industry figures like US Vogue editor Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld. Well Ms. Campbell, you’re living in Russia now, the land of fur and you wouldn’t be considered a diva unless you take the Moscow streets wearing your most fabulous fur coat.

What are your thoughts? Real fur or faux fur? Personally I find fur incredibly beautiful and I admit my mother vintage mink coat is what kept me alive in Moscow. Would I go and buy a new  real fur coat? No I wouldn’t. I prefer admiring it on the beautiful creature it belongs to. I would however never give myself the right to attack anyone who chooses to wear fur. It’s a hard line to draw. Some people attack people who wear fur, but they are ok with eating meat.  I love to hear your view on this.

  1. she does look beautiful!

  2. Such a good post! I have loads of thoughts around this, will write a post on the subject some time soon.

  3. Hi Dena, very interesting subject, and a good point for a future post.
My opinion, I eat meat, I love meat, but I do not believe in killing an animal if you are not going to eat its meat. Trophy hunting and fur hunting in my opinion should be stopped/illegal. Even rhino hunting is becoming a huge problem. We just had a breakthrough in illegal rhino hunting in south africa. A group of people were arrested, amongst them a veterinarian of all people. Imagine killing an animal just so you can use the horn. The rest goes to waste, that is a sin.

However, I will not attack someone else who wears fur, and I will not go naked to stop fur hunting. Not that it would have made a difference….hehe…

Hope that explains my take on things.

Thanks for your welcome comment on my last post, I agree with you on Karina’s legs, she does have stunning legs.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    Colin.

Hmm that’s a toughie…I am with you…I think it is beautiful, but I can’t even bring myself to buy it. I will admire it from afar, but I think I’d feel guilty if I gave money over for it. ::Shrugs::

  5. moviegirl:

I like these pics and I do have a fur coat as I live in Moscow. Its not only about beauty. This winter
they say will be damn cold minus 40 or even 50 and its just keep me alive I hope.

  6. Oh it’s a touchy subject, isn’t it?

Personally i have some old vintage fur pieces, and i think that’s ok BUT i would never go and buy new real fur.

  7. Interesting! I have to admit I do own a fur vest that I just adore. I feel like you said in your post, if you feel bad for the animals do not eat meat either. There is huge amount of abuse and cruelty in the food industry. Its likely a much much bigger problem than the fashion industry. Trends come and go, meanwhile we still eat at mcdonalds and KFC.

Very beautiful images by the way!

I admit that Naomi looks amazing but after the whole blood diamonds fiasco she is not my favorite person! ;)
And as for fur … as a vegetarian I don’t condone the killing of animals for anything so I would never buy real fur. However I understand that people would still buy and wear vintage fur (or fur coats from their mothers :) ), and also I would never attack anyone personally for their clothing choices. In places like Russia and Alaska I think people just can’t keep warm without using animal products so who am I to tell them to freeze?!

  9. Sher:

I think it is definitely a hard line to draw. I guess I haven’t really thought about it when we don’t have actual need for a fur coat in this climate. Naomi looks gorgeous here though, that I can’t deny:)

    Dena,

Who would not like to have time for himself or herself in this mad mad world and indulge in what one likes? Wish you all the Best to get your wish. Unfortunately most of us are hypocrites. We beat drums so loudly for a cause but go ahead and do things totally against that. You are absolutely right when you ask those who attack persons wearing furs, don’t they eat meat and where does it come from? Don’t they wear leather shows or coats? We have to understand that we need to exercise restraint in all aspects. Controlled culling of over-populated animals may be accepted but not indiscriminate for our luxury. If we support any cause, we must do it from heart.

    Take care

  11. Human being has always subjugate animals depending on their needs. I have always eaten meat and I dont think it’s bad, because I was “made” to eat meat as lyons eat zebras. And in countries like Russia, where the temperature is very cold, it’s natural that people kill animals to take their fur. But when it’s about beauty, style and fashion, I think it’s a very cruel process just to get a nice coat. Specially when nowadays we can make really beautiful faux fur coats that keep us warm. I can admire a fur, but I would never buy one

  12. She’s beautiful !
    And I’m wearing only faux-fur !

  13. Lisa:

Fur is so elegant and beautiful. I never buy new, but can appreciate vintage pieces. The damage has been done.
Sometimes I wish I was actually from Russia.

Thank you for all of your amazing comments and support. It has been such a joy to get to know you through your blog and our email interactions. When I entered the “community” I didn’t think about the real relationships I would develop. Your’s is one I truly value!

  15. Fur is beautiful.. but I hate the animals suffering for it.
I do wear fur clothing which I received as a gift but I don’t buy it myself!

  16. Those pics are beatiful:)

i’m a full vegetarian going on vegan, uses only cruelty free products and an animal activist. From my perspective i hate the idea of wearing both real or faux fur/leather etc. There are many ignorant ones who cant tell the difference and might end up buyin the real thing.Fur on animals is beautiful but just not on humans. Please watch china animal fur farms vids on youtube so one would be aware that wearing fur mean skining the animal alive and mite even change ur mind on wearing fur coats. To me i dont like taking the life of another to benefit me.
As an activist tryin to stop people wearing fur it is indeed infuriatin to see people wearing still choosing to wear real fur when there are countless cruelty-free alternatives. feels like our efforts r in vain.
Just because its “natural to klill animals” that doesnt make its right even then.who says animals are created to make our lives better. No matter how cold it is somewhere, it is still cruel to skin so many animals just to clothe one person. Like i mentioned b4 there are many alternatives like faux whatever, nylon, cotton etc.People have the choice to say NO if they are
“made” to do something, always eat meat or bought as gifts. It’s a matter of if they want to make changes.

As for Naomi whos known for her agressive looney diva attitude, she deserves this harsh judgement. It seems alot of black people like Beyonce, Snoop dogg
love wearing fur and consumin meat excessively. I guess once a barbarian always is a barbarian.

Closing one eye in the name of being slave for fashion or greed for food is just not right.I’m not saying everyone should completely stop eatin meat, just eat less meat, have a vegetarian mean once a week, choose farm and not factory produced meat, give respect, don’t waste food. Its becoz per person consume so much meat that animals are artificially injected to grow fast.bad for both humans n animals.more animals becoming extinct. take one step at a time. there are countless ways to care for animals like buying cruelty free cosmetics like mac, urban decay etc to stop animal testing.volunteering for animal shelters n so many ways.

    • Dena:

Val thanks for your comment and having just turned pescatarian you had me on everything until the racist paragragh. No need for such comments and calling people and a race for barbarian.
On my birthday my boyfriend took me to Gordon Ramsays resturant here in London. On the menue was meat meat and meat and animals stomachs, tongues and so on…
I felt such shame, shame in taking pleasure in eating animals this way. This was 2 months ago and I no longer eat meat except for fish.
